VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

Barlean's premium natural supplements is located in Ferndale, Washington and was founded in 1989. We create products that feed the mind and body and are a leading brand in health food stores around the country. We are in the process of transitioning aggressively into online sales directly through our e-commerce site and expanding our presence through online marketplaces.

Currently Barlean's is looking for the right candidate to fill the position of Vice President and Chief Financial Officer to lead and direct all finance functions of the operation (executive level and day-to-day), including but not limited to championing company technology platform conversions; formulating company direction, plans and strategic initiatives via growth opportunity feasibility studies; accounting procedures and financial controls; annual audits; budgeting; forecasting; due diligence; business contract negotiations; and insurance/risk management.

 

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA/CMA and/or MBA preferred).
  • Experience with successfully implementing new financial accounting, reporting and ERP systems.
  • Seven years minimum experience as the lead financial executive in a medium to large ($10 million+) corporation.
  • 10+ years progressive accounting or finance experience.
  • 3+ years in senior management position.
  • Outstanding knowledge and understanding of GAAP.
  • Thorough understanding of and personal involvement with systems and methodologies of finance and administration.
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills.
  • Masterful use of excel.
  • Excellent relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, confidence and executive presence.
  • Proven ability to mentor, lead and motivate staff.
  • Excellent analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Significant experience working with auditors and compliance-related issues.
  • Organized, proactive, and ability to work within deadlines.
     

Job duties include:

  • Assemble the various data input elements necessary to efficiently determine investment opportunity and risks. 
  • Provide robust detailed data collection, assimilation and executive reporting as it relates to both short-term and long-term growth initiatives. 
  • Establish and implement yearly financial objectives that align with the company's strategic objectives.
  • Responsible for the development and management of organization-wide financial strategy, performance measures, forecasts, budgets, financial processes and controls linked to strategic objectives.
  • Measure financial performance by assessing and analyzing financial and operational results.
  • Create effective business plans, metrics, strategic frameworks, and modeling to drive financial decisions, accountability and ownership across the organization.
  • Partner with President and executive team to model and analyze new business opportunities.
  • Review and approve all corporate contracts (including customer and other business leases) and establish controls related to negotiation, legal review, document management and renewals. 
  • Manage all insurance policies, renewals and claims processes.  Responsible for insurance broker relationships.
  • Review and present monthly financial reports to management including monthly profit and loss statements compared to budget.
  • Manage capital requests and the capital budgeting process and track performance relative to budget.
  • Review and analyze monthly financial results and provide recommendations to company management.
  • Develop departmental budgeting guidelines, create communication plan for implementation, and maintain monthly and annual operating budget, including a delineated expense approval process.
  • Provide financial advice to assist Marketing and Operations in determining best financial investment alternatives when considering warehouse and other upgrades. 
  • Supervise accounts payable and accounts receivable staff and ensure the proper functioning of all systems, databases and financial software.
  • Ensure regular maintenance and backup of all accounting systems.
  • Manage and optimize the month-end close process, constantly reviewing procedures while eliminating inefficiencies. 
  • Serve as a key point of contact and provide support for internal and external auditors.
  • Lead and manage fixed asset tracking, depreciation scheduling and reporting.
  • Maintain banking relationships and strategic alliances with vendors and business partners.
  • Utilize forward-looking models and activity-based analyses to provide financial insight into the organization's plans and operating budgets. 
  • Provide quarterly budget to forecast updates based on year to date actual results.
  • Remain current on audit best practices as well as state, federal and local laws regarding company operations.
  • Monitor and ensure timely filing of all local, state and federal tax returns.
  • Collaborate with in-house council to manage corporate legal vendor relationships and company corporate legal compliance activities.
  • Cost accounting experience
  • Direct implementation of needed corrections as determined by internal or external audits.
  • Review of planning processes and suggest improvements to current methods.
  • Analyze operations to identify areas in need of reorganization, downsizing or elimination.
  • Facilitates implementation of new systems and major modifications of existing systems to reduce downtime.
  • Oversees finance, information systems, human resources and administration departments.
