CONTROLLER

Barlean's Organic Oils is located in Ferndale, Washington and was founded in 1989. We create products that feed the mind and body and are a leading brand in health food stores around the country. We are in the process of transitioning aggressively into online sales directly through our e-commerce site and expanding our presence through online marketplaces.

 

Currently Barlean's is looking for the right candidate to fill the position of Controller to manage and direct the daily accounting activities ensuring that proper accounting and recording of the company's transactions are performed in an accurate and timely manner. The Controller produces financial and other key reports for management. The Controller will work closely with all the department leaders and their staff to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures.  

Pay Rate: $80,000+ DOE

Job duties include:

  • Responsible for the preparation of the company's monthly financial statements
  • Supervise the activities of all the accounting staff (A/R, A/P)
  • Manages the aging of Accounts Receivable and Payables
  • Verify subcontractors and vendors meet all requirements of contract agreement prior to any payments
  • Oversee month-end and year-end closing and coordinates and assigns duties to the accounting staff as needed
  • Maintain the accounting systems software to ensure the proper, complete and accurate record-keeping of accounting company transactions is performed within the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Evaluates departmental performance and adjusts daily operations when needed to ensure the department meets overall goals and objective
  • Conducts internal audits of processes and procedures
  • Takes the lead in implementation of needed corrections as determined by an audit (internal or external)
  • Maintains and reconciles the fixed assets to the general ledger of the company
  • Provides training, guidance and direction to employees to ensure work is performed in an efficient, timely and knowledgeable manner
  • Prepare multiple state agency reports for tax purposes to include reporting for multiple states the company operates in
  • Maintain all company operating, payroll, savings and investment bank accounts
  • Works closely with financial institutions concerning bank activity changes, enhancements and charges
  • Works on special projects as needed
  • Must stay up to date on best practices for accounting team
  • Assist with annual financial planning/budgets for the company
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • CPA/CMA or MBA Preferred
  • 5+ Years progressive accounting experience
  • Knowledge of computer based spreadsheets and reporting
  • Excellent communication skills
  • 3+ Years in a supervisory role.
  • Familiarity with Sage X3 ERP system
  • Demonstrated core leadership skills
  • Ability to motivate and encourage others
  • Ability to confront issues head on using tact and diplomacy
  • Strong active listening skills
  • Ability to create/direct sound business strategy and adhere to the plan
  • Ability to follow directions with written processes/procedures
  • Strong understanding of financial and managerial accounting principles
  • Proficient in reading, interpreting, analyzing financial statements and recommending changes needed to improve performance
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principals
  • Possess moderate keyboarding skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to create and present training materials to groups
  • Ability to multi-task effectively
  • Timely in all work and exceptional time management skills
  • Ability to apply sound judgement
  • Ability to live and demonstrate the company's mission, vision and value statements.
  • Strong understanding of fundamental payroll and associated taxes and benefits and how they apply to the actual cost of labor
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Trouble shooting and flexibility to meet deadlines
