Controller

Barlean's Organic Oils is located in Ferndale, Washington, and was founded in 1989. We create products that feed the mind and body and are a leading brand in health food stores around the country. We are in the process of transitioning aggressively into online sales directly through our e-commerce site and expanding our presence through online marketplaces.

Currently, Barlean's is looking for the right candidate to fill the position of Controller to manage and direct the daily accounting activities ensuring that proper accounting and recording of the company's transactions are performed in an accurate and timely manner. The Controller produces financial and other key reports for management. The Controller will work closely with all the department leaders and their staff to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures.

Pay Rate: $90,00 - $120,000 Depending on Experience

Work Hours: This position is Monday - Friday, on-site at our Ferndale, WA location.

Job Summary: Provide leadership and coordination of company financial planning, debt financing, and budget management functions. Ensure company accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the preparation of the company's monthly financial statements
  • Supervises the activities of all the accounting staff (A/R, A/P)
  • Manages the aging of Accounts Receivable and Payables
  • Verify subcontractors and vendors meet all requirements of the contract agreement before any payments
  • Oversee month-end and year-end closing and coordinate and assigns duties to the accounting staff as needed
  • Maintain the accounting systems software to ensure proper, complete, and accurate record-keeping is performed within the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Evaluates departmental performance and adjust daily operations when needed
  • Conducts internal audits of processes and procedures
  • Takes the lead in the implementation of needed corrections as determined by an audit (internal or external)
  • Maintains and reconciles the fixed assets to the general ledger of the company
  • Prepares state agency reports for tax purposes for multiple states
  • Maintain all company operating, payroll, savings, and investment bank accounts
  • Works closely with financial institutions concerning bank activity changes, enhancements, and charges
  • Must stay up to date on best practices for the accounting team
  • Assist with annual financial planning/budgets for the company
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Experience using Sage X3 - a plus
  • Excellent management and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and gets the job done.
  • Ability to sit for long periods.
  • Use a computer and monitor for long periods (more than six hours per day).

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Five years experience in Accounting, Auditing, or other related position required
